Woman Life Freedom x genEquality is a creative initiative in solidarity and support of the women and girls of Iran. This initiative started with an art activation during Art Basel Miami in December 2022, and will continue with more activations in 2023.

Woman Life Freedom @ Art Basel Miami

In November, genEquality Executive Director Sherry Hakimi brought together a group of nine Iranian diaspora women with the goal of creating participatory, community-driven art activation during Art Base Miami in December.

The group convened for a two-hour mural design brainstorming session, in which each brought inspirational elements — photos, videos, patterns, colors — to share, and thus the design seeds of the mural were planted. Based on this session and subsequent conversations, artist Mona Dash sketched out a rough design for the mural. The mural wall, which is ~100 feet long and 18 feet high, is located in the heart of Miami’s arts district, Wynwood.

The building’s architecture lent itself to a three-section design; each section signifies a different aspect of the Iranian movement for freedom, with Iranian cultural elements interwoven throughout.

Help us fund the creation of murals and art actuations worldwide. Art is a powerful universal language, able to amplify the voices of the silenced. The more we can raise, the more we can do to amplify their voices.

Every mural and art activation will be led by a local artist, with input and contribution from the local community, standing in solidarity with the feminist, female-led movement in Iran.
