Call for Art

Official Selections

Creatively activating artists and activists for a cause

In August 2022, we put out a Call For Art asking for poster submissions that incorporate genEquality’s four Reproductive Rights Shades of Equality as well as phrases that stand for reproductive rights and bodily autonomy. Our goals were to 1) create an opportunity for artists and creators use their skills and art as a rallying cry, and 2) support organizations that are providing reproductive healthcare to those who need it.

We received many thoughtful and creative submissions from across the United States and as far away as Australia. We’re grateful to the many artists, activists, and creators who took time to create and submit their poster art. All submissions were reviewed by our panel of judges.

Learn more about the official selections and the artists who created them. These four poster submissions will be available for purchase via the genEquality shop, with all proceeds going to the National Network of Abortion Funds.

“My style varies by project, but as a designer and illustrator with a background in painting, my work almost always intersects and blends these three disciplines. I like to use language to bring attention to issues without the emotional response that imagery can stimulate and then use that attention to squash a stigma or normalize something that has become taboo. For example, the word abortion is heavily stigmatized by politicians and members of the public who want it banned. They equate the word with murder. Seeing the word abortion without any imagery makes the issue about the word instead of the action. Separating the word from the emotion creates a safe space for conversation. My submission, “Vote”, is about creating inclusive, productive dialogue and voting for representatives who will do the same.”

"No" is a full sentence and no other explanation should be necessary. So often women don't have the right to set boundaries for themselves, so I loved the duality of "bodily autonomy is a human right" with "no is a human right."

Artist Statement

“Advocacy through art is something I have always been passionate about. After the overturning of Roe v Wade, I have been looking for an opportunity to protest through my creative abilities. I strive to create change for the better in the world we live in today, one piece of art at a time. As a young artist, I have so much more I want to do to help create change, and I will continue to inspire others for as long as I can.”
