Created by:
Staten Island-based Artist La Femme Cheri & Residents of Stapleton Houses

Over the course of several weeks, La Femme Cheri and Stapleton Houses residents came together for three virtual, collaborative design sessions to discuss the themes of Inclusive Safety, belonging, and ending gender-based and identity-based violence and harassment. They brainstormed how to send a positive message around these themes. Through this collaborative, community-driven process, Stapleton residents shared ideas on imagery, words, colors, and how to make the mural interactive for visitors and residents alike. La Femme Cheri was then able to create a sketch that reflected and incorporated the entire mural team’s ideas.

The main interactive feature of the Staten Island Inclusive Safety Mural is the double-dutch scene, which invites viewers in to play and jump through the ropes that are made of words that reflect the key messages of Inclusive Safety. The mural also includes bright colors and imagery - such as flowers, animals, a basketball court, and more - to send a positive message around inclusive and safe communities, and aim to create a feeling of belonging and safety for all.
