Anthony Posada & Townsend Harris High School Students

The Queens Inclusive Safety Mural was co-designed and co-created as a meditation on the themes of safety, inclusivity, and community.

Over the course of three virtual sessions, Anthony and the students imagined how to depict and symbolize the power of difference, unity, and love. They engaged in a conversation of what safety meant for them while discussing how Queens stood for this by bringing people from all walks of life together despite differences. They also discussed social justice issues currently impacting their community, and how they could come together to take a stand against those issues through the transformative power of art.

The design aspects emphasize the theme of strength in unity. The bold colors and many gestures capture inclusivity and diversity. The puzzle design beneath the arching hands represents welcomeness, equality, and community coming together. The unisphere, which is representative of Queens for being the most diverse borough in the world, is at the center bringing all the different elements together showing our collective struggle towards a just, equitable, and inclusive world.
